Practical TOGAF 9
International Certification of Enterprise Architects
Enterprise Architecture
Organisations worldwide are under tremendous pressure to produce better results, cut costs, introduce products and services more quickly and achieve this with reduced risk, sound governance and transparency. They recognize that the discipline of Enterprise Architecture can help them to transform their businesses and align their I.T. endeavours with their business initiatives while taking advantage of technology to achieve greater agility and efficiencies.
Enterprise Architecture (EA) covers the domains of Business, Process, Applications and Information and Technical Infrastructure, as well as how these all interact to deliver results. In addition, cross cutting concerns of risk, cost and quality of delivery are often addressed to ensure that these receive attention across the board. Enterprise architects, particularly those certified in TOGAF, are in great demand worldwide and frequently command salaries close to those of the CIO.
TOGAF 9
The Open Group is a worldwide collaborative of end user organizations and I.T. product and service providers that promotes standards to facilitate achieving benefits and ease of interoperability within and between organizations. Following early work funded by the US Government, a series of standards was evolved, with significant input from many industry contributors ultimately resulting in The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) – now at release 9.
TOGAF comprises a number of components, including: a comprehensive Architecture Development Method (ADM); A Standards Information Base; a number of Reference Models and the concept of managing the Enterprise Continuum – a repository of useful architectural building blocks and solutions. TOGAF 9 has extended the coverage of TOGAF into the business space, added a meta model, introduced a Content Framework and better defined deliverables and skill requirements. TOGAF has gained ground rapidly and is now the most widely accepted method for doing EA based upon recognised standards. The Open Group manages the evolution of TOGAF and certifies practitioners, training courses and tools.
This course is offered by Purple Griffon in partnership with PROMIS and is delivered by TOGAF certified consultants and instructors. The Practical TOGAF 9 course is certified by the Open Group.
Course Overview
The course covers the body of knowledge required for TOGAF 9 certification. Successful candidates, after examination, will be registered via the Open Group as certified TOGAF 9 Architects, becoming part of a select international community. Advantages of this course include:
- Training that goes beyond the typical TOGAF certification course which just covers the body of knowledge from the TOGAF manual
- 20 years' experience in the Strategy/EA space has been brought to the material
- The course is extremely practical, allowing time for 15 practical assignments
- An in-depth real world based case study shows application of techniques through a typical architecture implementation lifecycle
- Instructors are EA experts who have delivered in real client projects for over a decade
- Additional material over and above TOGAF is supplied to orient delegates to EA and modern architectures, such as SOA
Target Audience
Typical candidates would include those already working in the EA discipline and wanting to achieve an internationally recognised qualification. Others would be currently working in a senior I.T. or business analysis capacity and wanting to move into an EA role. Those who have had previous exposure to management (including program, project and portfolio management) and to modelling techniques (as used in business, information and systems analysis) will typically be at an advantage. I.T. managers and CIO's who need to initiate or manage an EA function will also benefit tremendously. Finally, consultants in outsourcing, ERP implementation and technology infrastructure advisory roles will also benefit.
Course Delivery
This course combines instructor-led seminars and group work built around a comprehensive case study, enabling participants to practice the tools and techniques covered. Group work stimulates participation and discussion. Throughout the course, delegates are encouraged to share their own personal experiences and concerns. Practical exercises, both theoretical and "real life", are used to ensure that the knowledge gained is both transferred and instilled. A comprehensive case study (synthesised from several real world projects) is used to illustrate principles and techniques. TOGAF is made practical through the exposure to the lifecycle of an EA implementation and production of typical deliverables.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, delegates should be able to:
- Understand the benefits, role and scope of EA
- Market the EA discipline within an organization
- Discuss the typical path to implementation of an EA capability
- Identify the various stages of an EA method and lifecycle and the purpose and outputs of each of these
- Plan an EA project at a high level
- Discuss who the stakeholders are in the EA process and what viewpoints are relevant to each
- Understand the TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM) Phases and Activities
- Prepare key deliverables for selected phases in the ADM life cycle (Note: it is beyond the scope of the course to teach detailed modelling techniques in all areas)
- Discuss the various reference models in TOGAF (e.g. TRM, IIIRM) and their applicability
- Show an understanding of the Enterprise Continuum and the role of a repository
- Use the concepts of building blocks to facilitate interoperability and reuse
- Understand the TOGAF Content Framework and Meta Model
- Be aware of the issues around Architecture Governance, Requirements Management and Architecture Capability
Course Prerequisites
Successful candidates can come from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. We do not exclude any delegate who is strongly motivated to do the course, so there are no strict prerequisites. We do not recommend the course for junior personnel. You should have at least 5 years working experience or University level qualifications and have had exposure to I.T. and business. Candidates should already have, or be motivated to move into, a role which requires enterprise level architectural thinking and responsibility.
Course Workload
The core course content is covered during the full day sessions. There may be preparatory reading or overnight review required. This should not exceed one hour on any given day. The daily sessions are intensive and delegates are expected to attend full time.
Course Assessment
Students will learn by experience and assessment of others. To complete the course, delegates are required to:
- Attend the full course
- Actively participate in the exercises, discussion & feedback
Assessment is by observation of individual and group work output. To complete registration, following the successful completion of instruction (as above), candidates must sit and pass an independent online examination administered by Prometric on behalf of the Open Group (exam costs are included in the course price). This is scheduled by the candidate ant a date and time of their choice. The exam is the combined TOGAF 9 Part 1 and 2 exam. Part 1 is closed book and covers the essential body of knowledge required to achieve TOGAF foundation registration. Part 2 is open book (an online reference is provided) and entails the application of the knowledge in case study type scenario questions. The answers to both sections are multiple choice, but the Part 2 questions require a knowledge beyond the facts.
Passing Part 1 and 2 is required for registration as a Certified TOGAF 9 Architect.
